How tracking works

Why does Trail Trove need “Always” location?

iOS only lets an app keep measuring in the background while it uses location. With “Always”, a trail keeps recording with the screen off. Without it, recording stops when you leave the app, and there is no automatic pause.

Light and Precise recording

Light (default) keeps GPS coarse in the background and records ascent, descent and the altitude profile exactly from the barometer, with a precise position at start, at stop and every 15 minutes. Between those fixes the route on the map is a straight line, helped by the locations of photos you take. Precise (Settings → Precise track) logs GPS continuously and uses more battery. While the app is on screen, or the Trail Trove Watch app is, recording is always precise.

Why does my ascent differ from other apps?

Trail Trove counts ascent and descent from the barometer’s relative altitude only, and ignores changes smaller than the ascent threshold (Settings, 3 m by default) as sensor noise. GPS altitude jumps by tens of metres and would inflate the total. Weather changes air pressure too: during a pause, altitude change is not counted.

Pause

When you stop for a break, Trail Trove pauses by itself and resumes when you walk on (needs “Always”). A pause you start yourself only ends when you resume. If you walk on while it is paused, you get a reminder with a Resume button.

The altitude is off

The barometer’s absolute altitude can be off by a few metres to tens of metres. Settings → Calibration sets it to a known altitude, for example from a summit sign or a map.

Emergency card

The emergency card shows your position in every format, altitude, place and time, large enough to read aloud. In Switzerland, hold the red button for two seconds to call Rega (1414); iOS asks before it dials. Trail Trove cannot send your position to Rega: their own app, Rega, does that. In Valais, call 144.

Apple Watch

The Watch app shows the altitude and air pressure measured by the watch, and starts, pauses, resumes and stops the iPhone’s trail. The iPhone records; the watch does not keep a track of its own. Complications update about every 30 minutes, as watchOS allows.

Widgets and Live Activity

The widget shows the last altitude, place, air pressure and daylight. iOS limits how often widgets refresh, so the values can be some minutes old. While a trail records, the Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island shows it live and has a pause button.

Steps, photos, export

Steps, walking distance and flights climbed are read from Apple Health; Trail Trove never writes to Health. Photos you take during a trail appear on its map and timeline; they are never copied, only referenced. A finished trail exports as GPX or CSV from its map.

Battery

Settings → Energy use shows iOS’s daily report of the app’s CPU time, screen and background time, and how long location ran precise or coarse. The first report arrives about a day after installing.

Deleting data

Swipe a trail to delete it. Deleting the app deletes all its data.
