Word Garner

Capture a word. Keep it.

Word Garner is a personal vocabulary notebook for iPhone. Share a word from whatever you are reading, and it comes back translated, explained and ready to revise — without an account, and without leaving your phone.

What it does

Word Garner is for the words you meet while reading, not a general dictionary: a very common word, or one with many senses, gets one short answer rather than a full entry. A capture is a word (up to 40 characters), a phrase (80) or a sentence (300); Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count twice, and one vocabulary holds up to 60,000 words. See support for why.

No account, no tracking

There is no sign-up and no server of ours holding your words. Your vocabulary is a database file on your phone; turn on iCloud sync and it also lives in your own iCloud, so your iPad has it too — where we cannot see it. There is no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking of any kind.

Words are translated on the phone itself. The only thing of yours that ever reaches us is text you asked Lexis about — Word Garner’s own small service — once you have signed in, and only when you tap for it. There is no API key to get, and you can stop at any time. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

Signing in is never needed to use Word Garner. There is no sign-in wall: capturing, translating on the device, the quiz, search, export and backup all work with no account at all. You are asked once, at the moment you tap something that needs it, and never again if you decline. Hosted storage may follow later, on the same terms — and the privacy policy is updated before any of it ships, as it was for this.

Getting it

Word Garner is coming to the App Store first; Android follows later. This page will carry the link as soon as it is there. What it cannot do yet is listed under support.
